NO SRSLY, A Blog-Centered SMUSA is a Bad Idea

No seriously, it’s cool to adopt Wordpress as the publishing platform for SMUSA. But making it blog-centric is just outright FAIL.

Why?

To begin with, SMU students are busy with mugging, project meetings and deadline rushing. We don’t even have the time to keep our online stuffs (Facebook, Twitter, you-name-it) updated. Even if we have a personal blog, we update it occasionally.

DISCLAIMER: For my case, I do scheduled posting. So, you can say that ALL MY POSTS ARE BELONG TO THE WEEKEND!!!

Busy schedules aside, we already have our own school email to keep us informed. I realized that SMUSA and other student organizations are leveraging on the “All Students (Undergraduate)” group on the Global Address Book to deliver important announcements, CCA-SPAM and other SMU-related messages. Updates are just a double-click away – so what’s the point of having a SMUSA blog?

What I suggest is for SMUSA’s website to be Twitter-centric, and put their focus on user feedback rather than announcing announced announcements. Although Twitter is potentially becoming a fast-fading fad as much as it has been a meteoric success, the website is perpetually subjected to changes and always under construction. Nevertheless, SMUSA should look at how to use their online platform to engaging us, instead of boring us with internal mundanities.
